Chapter 19

The late morning light streamed through the tent. I didn’t have to question if I was alone because the warm arms that stayed around me all night were gone. Sitting up, with my head spinning, I slipped on my clothes. I didn’t hear him walk in the tent, only the smell of coffee alerted me I wasn’t alone. Startled, I jumped, and Jared laughed, setting the coffee and two plates on the side table.

“Sorry, love.” He handed me two pills and my coffee. “I thought you might like breakfast in bed. That, and some hangover pills.”

“You’re a lifesaver,” I cooed, taking the pills from his hand and swallowing them.

He handed me my plate and sat down with his own. “I thought I’d spoil you a little since you didn’t incinerate me last night. I won’t lie, it would have been worth it, but I’m happy you didn’t.”

“Me too.”

I took a bite of the eggs and smiled. Loretta was an angel from the heavens. The woman could make any fare taste delicious. The palace cooks had nothing on her. “I never felt like I was losing control either. Although it’s not the same, I’m glad you didn’t go dim. That might have freaked me out.”

“My powers are not like yours or Micah’s. I can turn them on and off on demand,” he replied.

“Really? They’ve never failed you?” I asked, distracted. Maybe it was the hangover, but food never tasted so good. Then again, I was happier than I ever remembered being.

“Not once,” he said between sips of coffee.

I cupped my own coffee between my hands, smiling. Leaning over, Jared placed his lips on my forehead. “I love you, beautiful.”

“I love you, too.”

As happy as I was, there was something bringing me down. I needed to tell him the truth, about what Grace asked me to do. The fear of losing him was only overridden by the fact I believed our love could weather anything. Taking the last bite of my food, I put the empty plate away. “Jared, there is something I need to tell you and I’m scared that if I do, you might not love me anymore.”

The smile slipped off his face and he stilled. “There is nothing you could tell me that would make me not love you. I would hope you felt the same way about me.”

“Of course, I do. It’s just that this…” I stopped, and taking a deep breath said, “I need you to trust me, to listen. Can you do that?”

He nodded, and the air in the room became intense. Scared, the words spilled out of me quicker than I expected. “When Grace came, she told me they sent me here to spy on this camp.”

I glanced at him but whatever he was thinking was hidden behind a smooth brow. “I swear to you, I didn’t know. She said if I had known, it wouldn’t be believable. She’s convinced this camp is working to assist the Mice and wants me to help find the informant.
